First find the leaders, then sample equally

The tool pairs each option with its score, identifies the maximum, and draws uniformly only among options at that maximum. With Alpha, Beta, and Gamma scored 8, 10, and 10, the leader set is Beta and Gamma. Each then has probability 1/2 of winning; Alpha has probability zero because it is not tied for the highest score.

A worked weighted-choice finish

Suppose three venue proposals total 27, 31, and 31 points after a team has already applied its agreed criteria. Entering Harbor, Park, and Studio with those totals creates a two-option tie. The random result chooses Harbor or Studio with equal chance, while Park is excluded. The draw is defensible only because the scoring rule and totals were settled before the tie breaker ran.

Numbers must mean the same thing

Adding scores is valid only when every column uses a compatible scale and each criterion has the intended weight. A five-point convenience score plus a 100-point cost score will let cost dominate accidentally. Normalize or weight criteria before calculating totals, and keep the worksheet: a random tie break cannot repair a matrix whose inputs were inconsistent.

Where a tie breaker should stop

This tool resolves an exact top-score tie among pre-approved options. It cannot decide whether criteria were complete, whether votes were coerced, or whether a safety, legal, or budget constraint should eliminate an option. Apply mandatory constraints first; use chance only for the residual equality that genuinely remains.

Publish the tie before sampling

For a group decision, show the options and totals to everyone, confirm which entries share the maximum, then run one draw. If a participant disputes a criterion afterward, return to the scoring discussion rather than rerunning chance until a different winner appears. This separation keeps a legitimate tie break from becoming an opaque vote.

Chance belongs at the final step

Teams sometimes randomize too early because scoring feels slow. That hides disagreements about criteria rather than resolving them. Write the alternatives, score each against the agreed dimensions, and use this page only if the arithmetic ends in an exact top tie. The process remains explainable even to someone who preferred the other outcome.

Questions about resolving a scored tie

Can a lower score win?

No, only options tied for the highest score enter the draw.

Should criteria be weighted first?

Yes, weights and scales must be settled before totals are compared.
