Adjacent positions form disjoint pairs
The generator first samples a uniform order and then groups positions one-two, three-four, and so on. With six people it produces three pairs, and each person is paired with any particular other person with probability 1/5. This is not the same as choosing a partner independently: independent choices can make triangles or leave someone unmatched.
A six-person pairing
For Alex, Blair, Casey, Drew, Emery, and Finley, an output might be Alex–Emery, Blair–Drew, and Casey–Finley. Alex had five possible partners, each equally likely at 20%. Once Alex is paired with Emery, neither can appear in the remaining two pairs. The no-repeat property comes from consuming positions in one shuffled list.
Odd counts require a rule
Five names cannot be partitioned entirely into two-person pairs. Decide beforehand whether one person sits out, joins a three-person group, or whether a facilitator participates. Adding a late sixth person after the pairings are displayed creates a different draw. The tool randomizes a valid even roster; it does not decide how to treat a structural remainder.
Random is not balanced
A uniform pairing ignores skill, language, conflict, accessibility, and previous partners. That can be valuable for a casual icebreaker, but it may be unsuitable for mentoring or competitive teams. If pair quality matters, apply stated constraints or a balanced matching method. Do not claim that a random adjacent pairing equalizes ability merely because every pairing was possible.
Review pair consequences
After forming pairs, check practical constraints outside the random rule: every person needs a way to participate, no pair is left without required equipment, and facilitators know whether a trio is acceptable. A reroll should be reserved for a condition stated in advance, such as an absence discovered before the activity begins. Otherwise a sequence of redraws can conceal preference while retaining the appearance of a neutral pairing.
