Uniform choice from categories
This picker samples one cleaned item from a list with equal probability. Tea, Coffee, Water, and Juice create four categories, each with probability 1/4. Unlike a numeric interval, words have no natural distance: Coffee is not closer to Tea than to Water. The only mathematical claim is that each listed category receives one equally likely position.
Choosing a meeting drink
Suppose four colleagues agree to let the tool choose a shared refreshment from Tea, Coffee, Water, and Juice. A result of Water is one of four possible outcomes, so its pre-draw chance was 25%. If the group decides Juice is unavailable after Water appears, that is not a reason to redraw; availability must be settled before the list defines the options.
Cleaning changes meaning
Blank lines are ignored, but near-duplicates are a human decision. 'Coffee', 'iced coffee', and 'coffee' may be three legitimate choices or accidental copies. If they are alternatives, retain them deliberately. If they are spelling variants, combine them before selection. Equal chance applies to lines, not to an unstated idea of what those lines ought to represent.
When equal categories are wrong
A list item picker does not express stock levels, ranked preferences, or repeated rounds. Selecting a lunch dish from a menu is plausible when every option is available. Choosing a delivery method with Standard, Express, and Overnight demand shares belongs to a weighted picker. A shortlist whose first choice must be tried before the second needs an ordered shuffle instead.
Make categories comparable
A list can look neutral while mixing choices at different levels: 'coffee' beside 'tea with milk' is not necessarily a fair menu. Put alternatives at the same level of detail and remove options nobody can actually accept. After a result, record the chosen wording exactly; renaming an item afterwards can change what the group believes it selected. The picker provides one equal categorical outcome, while the preparation supplies the meaningful categories.

Read every category once and make unavailable or duplicate alternatives explicit before the single outcome is sampled.

Do identical items get extra odds?
Yes. Each retained line is one category ticket, so combine duplicates if they mean the same item.
