One entry per eligible person
A name wheel is a uniform categorical draw. With Ava, Noah, Mia, and Liam entered once, each person has probability 1/4. The algorithm sees strings, so a duplicated nickname gives that person an extra ticket even if the duplication was accidental.
Choosing a classroom helper
With four pupils listed once, Mia's chance of helper duty is 25%. If Mia is selected, the outcome says nothing about whether Mia was more deserving; it records one random position among four. Over eight independent days the expected number of turns for each pupil is two, not an entitlement to exactly two.
Roster errors change odds
Check absences, alternate spellings, and opt-outs before drawing. Adding Liam after Ava wins changes the pool for future draws but cannot rewrite the completed draw. For recurring duties, save a history so repeated chance does not unintentionally favour someone already selected.
When equality is insufficient
Names alone cannot represent required skills, accommodation needs, or a rotation promise. A name wheel chooses one eligible person; it cannot distribute a week of duties fairly without a separate schedule.
Use a record for recurring turns
For a weekly classroom role, keep the roster and dates beside the selections. A uniform draw can legitimately select Noah twice before Ava appears once, because each day restarts at one quarter for every entered pupil. If that outcome is unacceptable, the desired policy is a rotation or removal draw, not a claim that ordinary independent random choices must even themselves out.
One draw versus a queue
Six volunteers for one microphone slot have equal one-sixth chances when each appears once. If the event needs three speakers, run a shuffled order or remove selected names after each draw. Repeated single-name spins can select the first volunteer again, which is mathematically correct but procedurally unhelpful. Choosing the no-repeat mechanism at the outset is clearer than negotiating every later result.
Before selecting a person
Confirm that every line names one eligible individual and that nobody has been entered through both a nickname and a full name. The roster, rather than the animation, determines whose chance exists.
Result record
Note the selected person's role and date, especially where future eligibility depends on who has already served.
