For Alex, Blair, Casey, Drew, Emery, Finley, Gray, and Harper, suppose the displayed result is Gray. Gray had a 12.5% pre-draw chance, as did every other single entry. Across 24 separate captain selections, the expected number for each player is 24 × 1/8 = 3, but the actual count can be zero or several. Fair odds are not a rotation schedule.
Duplicates create extra tickets
If Alex is pasted twice into a nine-line roster while seven others appear once, Alex has 2/9 chance rather than 1/8. Check nicknames, spelling variants, substitutes, and opt-outs before the draw. A random picker is transparent only when the list is the agreed eligibility record; it cannot know that two strings refer to the same person.
Leadership criteria may outrank equal chance
A captain may need training, availability, authority, or the willingness to accept responsibility. When those requirements are present, establish the eligible shortlist first and then randomize among it if a tie remains. Selecting from the full roster can look neutral while ignoring the very criteria the role was created to serve.
Record the eligibility date
A captain draw is easiest to defend when the group can see who was eligible at the moment of selection. Someone joining after the draw can be scheduled for a later turn rather than triggering an unexplained rerun. For repeated meetings, keep a list of past captains and decide whether prior service removes, reduces, or leaves unchanged a person's chance. Those choices define rotation fairness, not the random index itself. Review the list before every new meeting.
