A matching made from adjacent entries
The partner generator shuffles the roster once and pairs adjacent people in that order. For eight distinct people, the output contains four disjoint pairs: no person can be paired twice in the same run. The model assumes every person can work with every other person and that a random partner is an acceptable outcome rather than a measure of compatibility.
Four pairs from a known roster
With Alex, Blair, Casey, Drew, Emery, Finley, Gray, and Harper, a shuffled sequence of Casey, Gray, Alex, Emery, Harper, Blair, Drew, Finley becomes Casey–Gray, Alex–Emery, Harper–Blair, and Drew–Finley. There are seven possible partners for Alex before the draw, each with probability 1/7. Seeing Alex paired with Emery says nothing about the pair in a later independent session.
An odd roster creates a bye
Seven participants cannot be divided into two-person pairs without somebody left over. The tool therefore returns three pairs and one bye. Decide beforehand whether that person observes, joins a facilitator, rotates in next round, or forms a trio. Treating the bye as an error after names are displayed invites selective redraws.
Pairing is not team balancing
A matching answers who works together once. It does not balance aggregate skill across competing sides, assign people to specialised positions, or prevent household and conflict pairings. If a pairing restriction is essential, make it part of the roster procedure before randomization. The browser cannot infer sensitive relationships or consent from names alone.
Protect voluntary participation
Partner work can expose personal, language, or mobility differences that a shuffled list cannot see. Offer an agreed alternative for someone who cannot participate in a two-person format, and do not require a public explanation. If a known restriction requires a reroll, state it before names are generated and apply it consistently. Random pairing is a procedure for eligible volunteers, not a reason to ignore a participant's needs. A facilitator should confirm the alternative privately before beginning.
