A one-to-one seat permutation
The seat picker shuffles the student list and assigns the first shuffled name to Seat 1, the next to Seat 2, and so on. With n entered students there are n! possible complete seating orders. Every student receives exactly one numbered seat, and every available number is used once. It assumes the numbered seats are equally usable for the stated purpose.
Eight students, eight numbered places
For Alex through Harper, the tool produces eight assignments such as Seat 1: Finley and Seat 8: Blair. Finley has probability 1/8 of Seat 1 before the draw, and the same 1/8 probability of any other listed seat. Once Finley is assigned Seat 1, the remaining seven students compete only for Seats 2 through 8; the assignments are not independent picks.
Seat number is not a suitability judgement
A random arrangement may place a student far from the board, beside a distraction, or away from needed support. Those are classroom conditions, not failures of the shuffle. Reserve accessible locations, required supervision positions, or equipment seats before placing the remaining eligible students. Do not use a random result to override an accommodation or a teacher's safety judgement.
Keep the physical map consistent
Number the room in the same pattern used by the output before students arrive. A map that reverses left and right after the draw makes a transparent assignment impossible to verify. If a seat is unavailable, remove it and rerun the assignment with the actual capacity; moving one student informally can create an unintended duplicate or empty place.
Use seating as an opening arrangement
A randomized map can be useful at the start of a new activity because it removes a visible preference from the initial placement. Observe whether the arrangement supports learning once the room is in use. A teacher may need to move a student for instruction, safety, or wellbeing; that later adjustment should be explained as a classroom decision rather than disguised as another random draw.
