Twelve faces and a central average
A d12 ranges from 1 to 12, with probability 1/12 for each face and an expected value of 6.5. It offers a wider single-die span than d8 or d10 while retaining a flat distribution. A named face is neither favoured nor rare relative to another named face; all twelve occupy the same one-twelfth share of the possible outcomes.
Checking a twelve-entry encounter table
Imagine entries numbered 1 through 12 for a travel event. A shown 11 selects entry 11, whose pre-roll probability was about 8.33%. In 24 independent visits to the table, entry 11 would be expected about twice, but it could appear none, once, or several times. The table author decides whether those entries have comparable consequences; equal dice odds alone do not do that.
A single d12 is not two sixes
Two d6s can also make values that reach 12, yet their totals are concentrated around 7. One d12 makes 1 and 12 as likely as 6 and 7. Select the die from the distribution the rule needs, not merely from the largest printed number. Replacing a d12 with two d6s changes every probability except by coincidence.
Applicable limits
The displayed face is raw input for a rule. It does not add a character bonus, resolve an opposed roll, or choose a calendar month unless the application supplies that mapping. If the desired outcome needs a total from several dice or a percentile pair, that calls for a different probability model.
A range check before play
The lowest possible raw value is 1 and the highest is 12. Any displayed value outside that interval is an input or implementation error, not an unusually lucky result. This simple boundary check is useful when transcribing a roll into a sheet, especially if a later modifier can legitimately push the final total beyond twelve. Record raw and modified values separately so the source of each number remains visible.
