An eight-point uniform scale
A d8 gives eight equiprobable integers, so the average face is 4.5 and each result has a 12.5% chance. Its extra range over a d6 makes high and low results less common in relative terms: one named extreme still occupies only one of eight faces. This is useful for tabletop effects that need more variation without the broad swing of a twenty-sided check.
A healing amount with a modifier
Consider an effect written as 1d8 + 1. If the roll is 7, the final amount is 8. The possible totals run from 2 through 9, and their expected value is 5.5 because the die contributes 4.5 before the fixed point is added. The modifier shifts every outcome equally; it does not make a 7 more likely than a 2 on the die itself.
Range is not a bell curve
One d8 has a flat distribution: 1, 2, and 8 are just as likely as 4. A player may feel that middle values happen more often, but that shape appears when several dice are added, not when a single eight-sided die is rolled. Keep that difference in mind when translating a rule from a single die to a pool or a sum.
Where the simple result stops
This roll does not include critical effects, rerolls, resistance, or a target number. It answers the raw eight-face event. Apply any game-specific multiplier or reduction afterwards, and use the written rule when a result is capped, replaced, or allowed to trigger another roll.
A probability statement worth preserving
When an effect says that 8 is a maximum outcome, it is tempting to describe it as an eight-point event. More precisely, 8 is one possible raw face with a one-in-eight chance. Record the die size alongside a result when comparing game sessions; the same numeral from a d6 and a d8 does not carry the same probability.
