The ordinary cube and its mean

A d6 selects one value from 1 to 6 with equal probability, giving a mean of 3.5. The mean lies between faces because it summarizes repeated trials. A cube is often used for board movement, random choice, and simple damage because the six labels are easy to inspect and the range is limited enough to understand without a table.

A board-game movement example

On a track where a token advances by one d6, a shown 5 moves the token five spaces. From the starting square, the next move can be 1 through 6, each at 1/6. Over 12 turns the expected distance is 42 spaces, calculated as 12 × 3.5. That estimate says nothing about where the token lands if the board has penalties, shortcuts, or a finish line.

Faces are not progress guarantees

A six is no more likely because several low faces appeared earlier. Independent browser rolls do not remember a streak. Conversely, repeatedly rolling until a six appears is a different experiment from making one move; the probability of at least one six grows with the number of permitted attempts. State the number of attempts before using the result for a contest or allocation.

What the cube model leaves out

The result is a face value only. It cannot simulate loaded dice, a game that treats matching dice specially, or a movement rule that requires an exact finish. Use a two-dice page for summed movement and a custom configuration when the die size or count differs from one ordinary six-sided die.

A six-entry allocation example

For six volunteers assigned to six identical first-round slots, label the slots 1 through 6 and keep the published label order with the result. The raw face selects a slot rather than judging a person. If the slots differ in value, a rotation or a more explicit allocation rule may be fairer than a single throw.

Does a streak make a six due?

No. Each independent roll keeps the same one-in-six chance for a six.

Why is the average 3.5?

Pairs 1 and 6, 2 and 5, and 3 and 4 each average 3.5.
