A pool preserves the individual faces

A dice pool produces several separate results rather than only one total. With eight six-sided dice, there are eight independent values from 1 through 6. This is useful when a ruleset counts successes, matches, highest faces, or individual effects. Summing the pool is possible, but it loses information that may matter for a rule such as one success for every face of 5 or 6.

Counting successes in an eight-die pool

Take success to mean 5 or 6 on a d6. Each die then succeeds with probability 2/6 = 1/3. If the display contains 6, 2, 5, 1, 4, 6, 3, and 5, there are four successes. The expected number before rolling is 8 × 1/3 = 2.67, yet a particular pool may show zero through eight successes.

The threshold must be stated first

A pool does not have one universal score. A game might count faces at least 4, treat only 6 as a success, cancel successes with 1s, or compare the highest die to a difficulty. Those rules produce different probabilities from exactly the same displayed values. Define the success condition and any cancellation before looking at the pool.

Outside the pool model

This page rolls ordinary d6 faces independently. It does not calculate a success probability for an arbitrary target, apply exploding sixes, or remember previous rolls. Use the individual values as evidence for the stated pool rule; do not convert them into a total unless the rule genuinely asks for a sum.

Pool size controls opportunity

With a one-third success chance per d6, increasing the pool from three dice to six doubles the expected successes from one to two. It does not guarantee two successes on any particular roll. This distinction matters when a ruleset lets a player add dice: the added die changes the number of independent chances rather than increasing every face value.
