One face from an even sample space

A standard die result is one integer chosen uniformly from the faces that exist on the die. With six faces, each of 1 through 6 has probability 1/6. The expected value is (1 + 6) / 2 = 3.5; it is a long-run average, not a face that can appear on one physical roll. This page is useful when a rule needs one neutral number, such as choosing a turn or resolving a simple table entry.

A six-sided check

Imagine six equally eligible tasks labelled 1 through 6. A displayed 4 selects task 4, and every label had the same 16.67% chance before the click. Rolling again because task 4 is unpopular changes the procedure after seeing the outcome. If some tasks deserve more chances, the labels must be repeated or a weighted rule must be agreed before any roll.

The die does not supply the rulebook

A result tells you which face occurred, but not what that face means. A game may interpret 1 as a mishap, while a classroom may interpret 1 as the first presenter. Publish that mapping before the draw. The calculation also assumes equally likely faces; it cannot test a physical die for manufacturing bias or prove that an outside game uses the same numbering.

When one face is insufficient

One uniform die cannot model a total made from several dice, a threshold with modifiers, or a table that needs 100 equally likely entries. Those questions change the sample space. Treat the single value as a complete answer only when the decision genuinely has one evenly weighted set of face labels.

A fair choice needs comparable options

Before using six faces to decide, check that each numbered option is actually available and that no participant has been represented twice. A die is transparent because its possible labels can be counted in advance. It cannot correct a candidate list that was incomplete, duplicated, or changed after the outcome was known.

Questions about this dice rule

Why is 3.5 mentioned when no face shows it?

It is the average of many six-sided rolls, not a possible one-roll value.

Can a roll choose an unequal prize list?

Only after the prize list has been deliberately represented with matching numbers of entries.
